Anesthesia will be administered at the start of every reconstruction procedure in order to ensure patient comfort. In some cases, general anesthesia will be required, while in others, a combination of local anesthesia and sedation will be utilized.
Skin grafting is a common technique utilized in trauma reconstruction. This involves transferring skin from another area of the patient’s body to the injured area. As a result, the skin of the area regains a more natural appearance, better matching the surrounding skin.
Tissue flaps may also be transferred. These flap can contain skin, muscle, and fat as needed. During flap-based reconstruction, the tissue flap remains connected to the blood supply of the donor region.
More complex reconstruction techniques may also be utilized in cases where the area affected by trauma involves structures like the nose or the eyes.
Once tissue reconstruction is complete, sutures may be used to close any incisions that were created during the process. The incisions will be dressed appropriately.
