Breast Augmentation

Deciding to get a breast augmentation can be an exciting and nerve-wracking time. Many women look forward to fulfilling their breast goals with surgery, but it can also be overwhelming to learn about different types of implants, sizes, shapes, and what will work best for the individual. Breast implants come in various shapes, sizes, and textures, and a surgeon can help determine which will work best for you to fulfill your goals. However, it’s helpful to go into a consultation with some background knowledge of the various implant options, so you’re better prepared to discuss them with your surgeon.

What Are My Breast Implant Options?

Dr. Prichard offers both saline and silicone implants for breast augmentation. Additionally, for women who wish to enhance their breasts but do not want to have implants, fat transfer breast augmentation may be a more desirable option.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

What’s the difference between saline and silicone implants? They each have a different look, feel, and potential concerns. Ultimately, each option works best for different people, depending on your body and desired results.

Saline Implants

If you’re looking for a round breast shape, want to correct breast asymmetry, and do not want silicone breast implants, then saline implants may be right for you. Saline implants are made of saltwater, which means if the implant ruptures, your body can absorb any leakage. Additionally, a smaller incision site is used for saline implants, and the implants themselves are generally considered more affordable than other options.

However, it is important to know that saline implants are not ideal for women who are very thin, as they have a higher tendency to ripple if very little tissue is covering the implant.

Silicone Implants

For women who want natural-looking breasts, less chance of rippling, and a more natural feeling similar to actual breast tissue, then silicone implants are an excellent option.

Silicone implants are made of silicone gel, which decreases the chance for implant rippling. The silicone also allows for a more natural look and feel. The cons with silicone implants include that a slightly larger incision is needed, and they cost more than other implant options.

What Are “Gummy Bear” Implants and Why Are They Preferred?

The silicone highly cohesive implants are also often referred to as “gummy bear” breast implants, as they have a thicker consistency and hold their shape. These silicone implants are also more durable and less chance of rupture/deflation. You can also have your breast volume significantly increased with this option.

Dr. Prichard offers and most commonly uses highly cohesive, silicone gel “gummy bear” implants, as these have proved very popular with patients.

Choosing Breast Implant Size & Shape

In addition to the type of implant you choose, you will also have choices regarding the size and shape of the implants. Other factors like how close you want your breasts to be to each other and how the size and shape look with your silhouette are also essential to discuss with Dr. Prichard.

When choosing the size you want your new breasts to be, it’s best to bring in pictures to your consultation so your surgeon can see what kinds of results you are looking for. You’ll want to consider how you want your new breasts to look in proportion to the rest of your body, and discuss these goals with Dr. Prichard so he can use the proper techniques to achieve your results.
