Stubborn Fat
Everyone’s body holds fat in different areas, and certain body parts are prone to having stubborn fat deposits. Stubborn fat can occur in various body parts but is most commonly found in the stomach, hips, thighs, and chin.
It can be incredibly frustrating to dedicate time and effort to exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet yet still be unable to lose body fat. Many people who have tried several workouts to target these pockets of fat are disappointed when they don’t get the contour results they want. Although they may have reduced their body fat substantially, one or two areas seem to stand out and are resistant.
What Does Liposuction Do?
If you’ve been struggling to lose stubborn fat, you may be a good candidate for liposuction. This procedure can treat several body areas, giving you a more sculpted appearance. Liposuction targets stubborn pockets of fat and removes them, leaving patients with slimmer, more defined body contours. While liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss, it can significantly complement your weight loss results and balance your body proportions by removing fat from diet and exercise-resistant areas.
How Does Liposuction Work?
Liposuction is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia to make patients comfortable and not feel pain during surgery. Dr. Prichard will make small incisions around the chosen treatment area during your liposuction procedure. A tumescent solution will be injected to numb the area and firm the stubborn fat. A cannula—a thin, hollow tube—is used to suction the fat out of the body. This is usually aided by some energy source, including ‘power assisted’ liposuction, in which the cannula vibrates at a high rate of speed in order to smoothly and evenly contour these areas.
What Body Areas Can Be Treated With Liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most versatile body contouring procedures, as it can remove fat from many different areas. Depending on the patient, treatment areas can include:
- Stomach
- Hips
- Back
- Thighs
- Knees
- Arms
- Face
- Neck
Liposuction results work best for people with good skin elasticity. If your skin is sagging, you may need to combine other procedures with liposuction to remove excess skin and tighten the remaining skin for the best results. In some cases, patients getting liposuction on the stomach may add a tummy tuck to remove sagging skin while reshaping the abdominal contours.
What Can I Expect After Liposuction?
After your surgery, the treatment areas will be covered with compression garments to help your body heal and reduce swelling. Your recovery timeline will vary depending on the body area where you had liposuction. You can anticipate needing to wear the compression garments on your body for four to six weeks. Dr. Prichard will provide you with specific aftercare instructions.
You may experience swelling in the treated area for a few months. Once the swelling fully subsides, you can see and enjoy your newly contoured results. The best way to maintain your liposuction results is to stay at a stable weight. While liposuction cannot stop your skin from losing firmness as you naturally age, your results are considered to be long-lasting and can be enjoyed for many years to come.
